What’s the weather like in January?

In January, Malta experiences mild winter weather with average temperatures ranging from 10 to 16°C (49 to 61°F). It is one of the wettest months, receiving about 95mm of rainfall, but also enjoys around 10 hours of daylight and approximately 5 hours of sunshine every day.

If you’re looking to enjoy the warm winter sun during the darker and colder months of the year, January can be a good time to plan a trip to the country. However, don’t expect summer heat and endless days on the beach as many locals and tourists would do during the hotter months of the year, such as June, July, August and September.

Malta’s climate can be a bit hard to predict, and sometimes, cold days can follow extremely warm and sunny days and vice versa.  Dull weather is uncommon, and blue skies are still quite prevalent, even if it is January. Just bear in mind that the rainfall can be heavy and that Maltese storms can be intense and somewhat violent at times, but they go away as quickly as they come. In short, don’t let the bad weather stop you from having the best time on the island.

What to wear and what essentials to pack?

• Layers are your best friend if you’re visiting during the winter months. It’s best to bring clothing you can layer and easily take off since it’s very common to suddenly switch between feeling cold or warm

• Thermal clothing might also be a good idea, depending on the weather forecast during the time you will be visiting.

• A waterproof coat or jacket would also be wise to pack since rain showers can be quite heavy.

• It’s also a smart idea to pack boots or walking shoes that can withstand getting wet.

• An umbrella is also essential, especially if it can withstand strong winds. (We will have brollys on hand for all guests to use.)
